Project Management Professional since 2008, I have managed projects for small, medium and large organizations with budgets from a few thousand USD to over a billion USD. I had a dual role on smaller projects for many years where my technical engineering and project management roles overlapped, providing me the opportunity to learn the importance of not only providing a good quality technical solution but also owning the relationship, and trade-offs, between Scope, Cost and Schedule, and how to interface effectively with customers to align on expectations. Later in my career, I managed a 1.3 billion USD project with over 400 direct and indirect personnel reporting to me over a 5 year period.
I have held numerous roles managing engineering teams, sometimes exclusively and other times overlapping with project management roles. Early in my career I managed a small engineering team providing the team with the tools, training and guidance for them to be successful. Later in my career I managed a team of engineers for a fortune 500 company where we were responsible for the development and maintenance of an enterprise-wide engineering toolkit for all company projects to use to improve the quality of the delivered solutions, and to standardise on fewer technical platforms with the goal to streamline corporate operations, training requirements and maintenance issues.
I hold an honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. After graduation I quickly developed my technical proficiency in Automation and Control Systems. I have demonstrated experience of designing Fire and Gas Systems, Safety Instrumented Systems, Burner Management Systems, Process Control Systems, SCADA systems and PLC systems. This experience includes hardware design, applications development with HMI configuration, and field installation, commissioning and startup.
I am an inspirational leader; I lead by example with day-to-day visible leadership. I set strong but achievable targets and hold the team accountable. I develop individual relationships, analyse team member capabilities and provide assignments to develop weaknesses while capitalizing on strengths. I provide direct positive and constructive feedback in real time and pro-actively engage team members when additional guidance or encouragement is needed.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed engaging with less experienced project and engineering professionals to develop their technical and inter-personal skills, empowering them to go above and beyond their own expectations. To achieve this goal, I endeavour to develop a close personal mentoring relationship based on mutual respect and trust. First understanding their desires and career expectations and then finding a way to help and guide them to their goals.
My early career experience was focussed on the project execution phase and delivery/turnover of Control Systems to operations, my mid-career experience included Pre-FEED and FEED (Front End Engineering Design) project phases, and my latter career experience included all phases of the Project Lifecycle from initiation to delivery to Operations. I have held engineering and/or project roles in Supplier, Engineering Contractor and End User organizations, experiencing multiple project phases in each type of company in the project value chain.
